The hand tools used in crop harvesting were ancient in origin and underwent a slow process of evolution over a span of many centuries. By these means, a huge labour force was needed at harvest time to carry out all the separate tasks for gathering in the crop. During the course of the Victorian period, mechanised methods were developed to replace the tools and substantially raise the output per worker.
