Roman pottery sagger
Base of a large, thick walled, bowl like vessel with the footings for a vertical prop at its centre. The inner face is heavily coated with splatters of green glaze. Used in the manufacture of glazed ware
Roman kiln sagger from Holt, Wrexham, 80-250 CE.
The Roman army established kilns on the west bank of the river Dee to supply the Twentieth Legion at Chester. The products were carried to Chester by river. Most of the pottery they produced was oxidized ware, with an orangey-red colour, but they also made some fine green glazed pottery.
