Roman wooden writing tablet
Spall from the upper or lower edge of a wooden stylus writing tablet, retaining full width of the panel and three margins; wide-grained softwood. The recessed panel (for wax, of which no trace remains) is contained to the sides by raised margins; a single small hole partly preserved on the incomplete long margin would have been matched by another; these held the loops which bound panels together so that inscribed tabellae could be closed face-to-face.
