19th century token : Brecknock
A silver one shilling token issued by George North in Brecknock. George North provided carrier services between Brecknock and London. Economic developments from the 17th century onwards meant that businesses which enabled the movement of goods across the country became increasingly popular.
Tokens were issued by corporations, tradespersons and businesses to act as alternative currency in exchange for their services. In the early 19th century, this helped compensate for the shortage of official silver currency during the Napoleonic Wars.
