Gwn bach
Gwn bach, from Abergwili.
Made from tabby woven wool fabric with raised nap. Red triple-stripes on black ground. Elbow-length sleeves with c. 16cm wide section stitched to lower ends. These are turned up by 8cm and are trimmed with a 5cm wide black moiré silk ribbon (upper 0.5cm are folded back). Sleeves are gathered into shoulders (slightly puffy). Tails curved towards back. Tails made from two larger panels at sides and two narrow panels at centre back, which are pleated. The larger side panels each have a triangular piece of fabric stitched on towards lower centre back (to complete the shape of the panel). Domed self-fabric-covered buttons at centre back waist (above tail pleats) - missing button on proper left side. Bodice section is constructed from six pieces of fabric: two at shoulder, two at back and two at sides/front. The front is partly lined (to under-arms); outer fabric turned back by 5cm at centre front opening. No discernable evidence for fastening mechanism at centre front. Two pieces of fabric stitched onto lower corners of centre front opening [shaped like 1/4 of a circle]. All hand-stitched with brown flax-fibre thread (2-ply, S-twist).
