Hunting coat

Holywell Hunt coat, about 1790-1800. Purchased by vendor at a sale of property belonging to the Morgan family of Golden Grove, Llanasa, Flintshire.

Long frock coat made from red woollen fabric (tabby woven with raised nap) and red velvet collar (faded to pink). Nine gold-coloured buttons on proper right side. Decorative stitching using silver metal thread outlining rectangular spaces which correspond with all nine button. However, only five are fitted with actual buttonholes. Similar metal thread embroidery on velvet collar. Sleeves are lined with white tabby-woven cellulosic fabric. Turn-ups at cuffs. Two small self-covered buttons to close slit at outer cuffs (one on turn-up, one on sleeve). Four gold-coloured metal buttons on tail: two at top, two at bottom. Upper two buttons are reinforced with patches of red woollen fabric stitched to inside. Sides of tails partly lined with red wool fabric (same as outer). Upper part of coat is not lined apart from semi-circular pieces of red wool fabric under arms, curved strip along back of neck and strips along centre front. Flap pockets on either side of hip with concealed self-covered button closure. Pockets lined with brown linen tabby fabric. Loosely woven white linen tabby fabric as interlining underneath curved strip of red wool surrounding back of neck; red fabric is mainly worked with raw edges (no turn-backs). Pleats on either side of vent are stitched in two places to keep them in position.
