Shawl
Shawl; 19th c.; black silk; semi-transparent with pattern of black stripes; stitched-on fringe on all 4 sides; Selvages along 2 sides of fabric, small hem at upper and lower edge.
Unusual construction: highly spun singles yarns (2 used as 1 pick) used as wefts, warps are twisted once after each pick, stripes are created by using floss silk as wefts. In those areas, the warps are pushed closely together in groups, giving the weft-wise stripes a satin-like sheen. One wide stripe (w=3.5cm) alternates with 3 narrow stripes (w=0.2cm)
