Quilt

Wholecloth quilt made by Gwen Davies (nee Jenkins) of Cymer, Rhondda, at a quilting class held in Horeb Chapel during the 1950s. Mrs Davies was a originally from Mount Pleasant. Before marriage, she worked in the Porth CWS, but subsequently became a homemaker. She later worked as a 'dinner lady' at Porth Secondary School.

The front of the quilt is made from four pieces of blue plain woven cotton, joined together with a sewing machine with two vertical and one horizontal seams in the centre. The edges are turned in and top stitched with the same quilting stitches. The filling is a layer of soft white cotton wadding. The back is made from four pieces of printed paisley, plain woven cotton, joined in the same way as the front. The background colour is yellow with the pattern printed in black, grey, green, turquoise and pink.

The quilting is made by hand using six S plied Z spun blue cotton thread. The design features a central diamond with a rose in the middle and spiral and leaf motifs around the edge. This is inside a square with trellis pattern and surrounded by border with diamonds with spirals and zigzags with leaves. The next border is filled with trellis pattern and the outer border has a semi-circle and trellis design. Each corner features a long leaf with spirals at the sides.
