Modern cornelian intaglio (bearded philosopher)
Gemstone found in the topsoil in the excavation of barrack buildings at Myrtle Cottages site, Caerleon in 1939. Held as a pendant within a gilded bronze band, its prisitine condition shows that it has never been set as a ring stone. The subject is common on Roman gems, but the rather mechanical style of the engraving and the unusual orange colour of the stone, show this intaglio to be a modern copy, probably of the nineteenth or early twentieth century.
