Portrait of Robert Howell Vaughan, aged c.60
Robert Howell Vaughan worked for a while as a surgeon in Chester. In 1783 he succeeded his spendthrift brother at Hengwrt in Merioneth, and also inherited Nannau. He began to rebuild the house in 1788 and was created a baronet in 1791. He is shown here in Van Dyck' fancy dress, and wears the badge of the Anglesey Druidical Society, a gentlemen's drinking and charitable society, which met in Beaumaris.
