CANVAS, embroidered with coloured wools in cross stitch. At the top, in three horizontal rows separated by a wavy floral stem and a zig-zag stripe, are capital and small letters of the alphabet and numerals to 10, Beneath there is a row of conventional tree, bird and dog designs. In the middle is a vase of flowers flanked by two large flowering plants in pots. At the bottom is the inscription: "Mary. Evans. Age 12. April 15 / 1885 ". There is a narrow geometrical border.
