Robe
Peers robe made from red fulled wool and a cream silk lining. Metal braid and ermine fur lining.
Description of cover:
Cover for Peer's Robe, made from red fulled wool and lined with cream glazed cotton (tabby-weave).
Along the upper edge are 12 vertical slits, finished off with hand-sewn buttonhole stitch using brown thread to enable a draw-string closure. The slits are 4cm long. Two red wool ropes (0.6cm in width, S-twist) are threaded through the slits. Large tassels (16cm long) are attached to either side of the draw-string closure (one on each rope). The same tassels are attached to the lower corners of the cover, although the one on the proper left is missing. The tassels are made of red wool over a wooden core.
A printed paper label with information on the maker is handstitched to the front of the cover. The title 'Lord Gladstone of Hawarden' is hand-written onto the label using black ink. The inside of the cover also features a maker's mark printed onto the cream lining fabric.
