Seal impression: Hartlepool
Under a church-like canopy suppported by slender pillars, St Hilda (who left Hartlepool c.657 A.D. to found Whitby Abbey) stands on a platform, holding her pastoral staff in her right hand (crook turned outwards), and a book against her breast with her left hand. Facing her, on either side, is a tonsured monk vested and celebrating the Eucharist at a draped altar upon which a chalice stands. Each priest is elevating the Host upon which the Holy Spirit descends as a dove, touching the wafer with his breath. Above each dove, dext. An estoile, sin. A new (crescent) moon
