Medieval lead ampulla
The ampulla is incomplete, missing the mouth and the side loops (with a surviving length of 47.3mm and a weight of 44.9g). The neck is mostly closed and has straight parallel sides, and is of oval section (21mm wide and 9.6mm thick). Stubs from the side loops begin 0-2mm above the body and have a length of 12mm (4mm internal). The body has a maximum width of 38.1mm and a thickness of 7.9mm. The obverse face is convex and is decorated with the scallop motif, representing the emblem of pilgrimage, and has seven bold and curved ribs producing a corrugated effect, of Spencer (1990, p59) Type I. The ribs are wider at the base and narrow towards the neck. There is no evidence that the ribs continue on to the neck. The reverse face is flat and plain with a bevelled edge. Casting flashes are evident along the edges of the ampulla.
