Late Bronze Age bronze socketed axe
Plain, slender socketed axe with prominent outsplaying moulding, from which high placed loop emerges. The exterior of the socket mouth has an ovoid shape, whilst the internal socket shape is sub-rectangular. When cast, excess metal was allowed to solidify around and above the whole of moulded mouth top. Later filed down, but remaining visible as continuous irregular shaped flash. Sides of axe straight in upper section then expanding slightly (concave) to form cutting edge. Surfaces of axe have shallow longitudinal striations, possibly created by slight imperfections in mould surface shaping. Mould pieces poorly matched up, as indicated by assymetric casting seam down loop side. Slight blemish on blade surface indicates imperfection in mould shape. Blunted casting seams down sides visible, however loop not trimmed. Cutting edge remains preserved and sharp and is moderately convex in shape. Green patina with patches of black patina on upper sides (tenorite).
