Stick back chair
Steam-bent chair of oak and ash. Made in Treforest, south Wales, mid 1800s. Four-legged stick back country armchair; solid wooden seat with legs and sticks socketed into seat; high back with sticks terminating into a comb.
This chair is a good example to show how wood could be bent using basic tools and resulting in different levels of success. They may appear primitive to the modern eye but steam bending wood with limited tools is not an easy task. The wood was firstly shaped with a knife to make a thin section that would then be heated using steam.
