Wall hanging

Burgess, Cefyn

A wallhanging created for Llys Llywelyn, depicting the legend of Culhwch ac Olwen. It was designed by pupils from Ysgol Gymraeg Nant Caerau, Cardiff, under the guidance of Cefyn Burgess. The design was transferred to fabric and appliqued by volunteers from the Cardiff and Swansea area over a period a year.

Textile hanging with 3 rows of narrative panels carried out in applique embroidery. Hand-stitched apart from edging which is machine-sewn and finished with overlocking stitches. On this hanging, each patch appears to be machine stitched in place prior to hand stitching the edging (see below). The three rows are separated by bands of fabric which in themselves have little narrative elements on them. Different colour wool patches are cut out and secured to the ground fabric with a line of wool yarn which is laid and couched over the edge to protect it from fraying. Details are embroidered using different techniques, such as back stitch and laid-thread couching. Multi coloured wool flannel is used for the applique patches and maroon and blue basket-woven linen fabric is used as the ground. A green fabric of the same type is used as the strip separating 2nd and 3rd narrative band. The Embroidery threads are different colour woollen yarn, sewing thread and some areas of metal thread (both silver and gold). The hanging has a 4.5cm wide edge binding using maroon linen fabric. The same fabric is used to create a 3-part pole sleeve along the upper egde on the revere of the hanging. The backing is made from a pale grey fabric which has an irregular type of twill weave: the pattern repeats every 4 yarns, resulting in narrow, warp-wise lines. There are no seams in the backing fabric which (judging by the dimensions of the piece) suggests that the warp runs in the horizontal direction.
