Medieval lead ampulla

The ampulla is incomplete, missing one face of the damaged neck and the side loops (with a damaged length of 61.2mm and a weight of 43.9g). The mouth was expanded. The neck had straight parallel sides and was of oval section (26mm wide and 11.9mm thick). Stubs from the side loops begin 2mm above the body and have a length of 12mm (3mm internal). The body has a maximum width of 38.9mm and a thickness of 10.5mm. The obverse face is convex and is decorated with the scallop motif, representing the emblem of pilgrimage, and has seven bold and curved ribs producing a corrugated effect, of Spencer (1990, p59), Type I. The ribs are wider at the base and narrow towards the neck, with the suggestion that they continue and weaken along the neck. The reverse face is flat and plain with a bevelled edge. Casting flashes are evident along the edges of the ampulla.
