San Giorgio Maggiore, Twilight
A view of the monastery island of San Giorgio, painted from the south-eastern end of Venice. On the right are faintly visible the dome of Santa Maria della Salute and the mouth of the Grand Canal. Every evening in late November 1908, Monet and his wife made gondola trips to enjoy 'these splendid sunsets which are unique in the world'. Venice, he claimed, was too beautiful to paint. This work was purchased by Gwendoline Davies in 1912, directly from Monet's exhibition of his Venetian Scenes in Paris. Monet painted this view in series, and it may look familiar to fans of 1999 film The Thomas Crown Affair.

Hi Clare,
This work can be found on display in Gallery 16, the French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism Gallery. Please do however check the website before you travel for up to date information on Gallery closures.
We hope you enjoy your visit.
thanks
I’m very sorry that you were disappointed on your visit. This work isn’t currently on display because its usual place is taken by two paintings by Renoir on loan from the National Gallery, 'A Pair of Dancing Girls with Musical Instruments'. I have discussed this with our Art department and we expect that 'San Giorgio Maggiore, Twilight' will be back on display in early August.
Best wishes,
Marc

Hi there Tony
Further to my earlier comment, I can confirm that San Giorgio Maggiore in Twilight is off display for conservation work at the moment, and is then part of the 6 venue Japan tour between March 2017 and June 2018. Once it is back from touring, the aim will be to redisplay it here in Cardiff.
Best wishes,
Sara

Thank for your enquiry - Unfortunately San Giorgio Maggiore by Twilight will not be on display on 4 January 2017. It is part of an international tour and will not be back on display until the summer of 2018.
Apologies for any inconvenience,
Graham
