KARLOWSKA, Stanislawa de (Born in Poland, Karlowska studied art in Warsaw and Krakow and at the Academy Julian in Paris in mid-1900's. She married the painter Robert Bevan and they settled in London. They were both founder members of the London Group, with whom they exhibited for many years.)
Karlowska studied in Warsaw and Kraków in her native Poland, travelling to Paris in 1896 to continue her training at the prestigious Académie Julian. She later moved to London, becoming an important member of The London Group in 1914. Unlike its predecessor, The Camden Town Group, The London Group elected female members. Karlowska’s rich style was influenced by Eastern European folk art and post-impressionism.
