Cup, cabinet

Baxter, Thomas (junior) (1782 - 1821)

Cabinet cup, soft-paste porcelain; standing on a straight sided foot rim, indented above, slightly tapered cylindrical shape, flaring at lip; snake headed high loop handle fixed to the rim, the tail joined to the cup in two places and terminating with a snake head and bead; painted with an octagonal panel of finely painted seashells, including a conch, on a bed of yellow, pink, red, and green seaweed, on a table top with a brown background, bordered by a gilt band and line; border of gilt scales above foot, and below lip, a gilt border of dotted trellis below crosses, separated by scrolls, circles and inverted teardrops; inside lip a gilt border of swags and foliage; gilt handle, gilt band to foot rim.
