Medieval pottery jar
Avon Area (fabric 5) Hard, sandy fabric, mid- or dark grey in colour with surfaces in the same colour range; the vessels have fairly thin walls. The fabric is sandy, containing few other grits although small to medium-sized gravels do occur. Flared mid-height rims with a simple profile, sometimes with an external bead. Incised wavy-line combed decoration is a common feature, appearing round the girth of the jar aswell as the rim or its upper edge. Finger indentation is also found on the upper edge of the rim, while vertical strips with scalloped outer face are also used to decoprate the vessels.
