Campbell, Thalia (Thalia Delphine Campbell (née Childs) was born in Torquay in 1937. Her father had a tailor's shop on the seafront. Influenced by her grandmother who had witnessed the Suffragettes clashing with the police in early 20th century London, Thalia became politically aware from a young age. She completed a two year teacher-training course at Matlock College, Derbyshire, and became a primary school teacher. In 1959, she met her husband, Ian Campbell. They had four children in the 1960s. The family moved to Wales in the late 1960s. Between 1973-6, Thalia studied for an art degree at Aberystwyth, and eventually became an extra-mural lecturer for the college. In 1981, she was one of the founders of the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp, and became well-known for making banners to display on the military base's perimeter fence.)
Campbell, Lucy
Tyrrell, Hannah

Replica of a banner originally made by Thalia Campbell, Lucy Campbell and Hannah Tyrrell on the march from Cardiff to Greenham Common, 27 August-5 September 1981. The march was organised by the Women for Life on Earth group. This replica banner was subsequently made by Thalia Campbell and displayed in exhibitions to draw attention to the women's cause. The original banner was destroyed by the authorities.

White tabby woven cotton ground fabric (cut from a sheet) inscribed and drawn-on with multicoloured markers (red, green, black, blue, yellow). Some areas appliquéd with shiny blue synthetic fabric (underneath each appliquéd area, the ground fabric is trimmed away). Design features the peace symbol, the woman's symbol, the US flag, a green fence, and elements of a map (showing the Severn Estuary and marking the route of the march from Cardiff to Greenham Common).

Along the sides, there are c.13cm wide sleeves (closed at the top) made from black synthetic fabric (both twill and tabby are used), for the insertion of poles. Along the top edge there is a one inch wide brown cotton herringbone-twill tape as a reinforcement. Twelve white circles (Ø 2.2cm) of hard Velcro® are adhered to this brown tape. In addition, the banner has five black hanging loops along the top, made from 2.4cm wide synthetic ribbon. The outer loops (at the upper corners) are stitched over the Velcro tabs, suggesting that the Velcro was the original hanging mechanism, which was then superseded by the hanging loops. At the upper corners, there are remains of 2.4cm wide brown Petersham ribbon which would have extended sideways from the edge of the banner. On the proper right side, the remains of this ribbon are longer and are tied into a knot. All machine-stitched (using white, black, red, light-blue and dark-green threads, in straight as well as zig-zag stitch). Only the black hanging loops are hand-stitched with large tacking stitches using white thread (two threads used as one).
