"The Moon in St Brides" Skomer

HOWARD-JONES, Ray (1903-1996)

During summer stays on the island of Skomer, Ray Howard-Jones was inspired by nature, spirituality and Celtic mystery and legends. She created a huge body of work on this island, often painting coastal scenes and seascapes on paper. In this work, she looks across to St Brides, depicting the orange moon floating over the mainland. Her impressionistic style and remarkable use of colour make this painted scene comparable to the first Impressionist work, Monet’s Impression, Sunrise of 1872 which is displayed at the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris.
