Pleistocene mammoth tusk
A fragment of reconstructed mammoth tusk. It is only the outer part of the tusk that survives and it is from an area close to the mammoth's cranium. The fragment is badly sheared and it is reconstructed from many separate pieces, most of which show evidence for ancient as well as recent damage. The outer surface of the ivory is stained a pinkish-white colour, but where there are recent breaks the colour is very white.
