The Stables Dowlais (drawing)
Hughes, Olwen (Born and brought up in Rhymney. Educated in Wales, she later lived and worked in Leicester. She provided illustrations for various publications and her work appeared regularly in the Western Mail and Leicester Mercury. She was awarded MBE in 2002 ‘for services to the community’.)
Pen and ink drawing of Dowlais Ironworks Stables (built in 1820), signed and dated 1977. Depicts the imposing Palladian front facade of the two-story stable complex from the south. The depiction shows the structure in decay and omits the south west end of the façade which was partly demolished prior to this time. Restoration began in 1981 but in 1982 much of the north east block collapsed – this depiction helps record that length of façade prior to collapse and rebuilding for conversion into housing. On the reverse is an incomplete draft of the same scene.
