Plate

South Wales Pottery

Plate, earthenware, standing on a very narrow foot rim, cushion-moulded spreading sides, waved outer rim; transfer printed in pale blue with a version of the 'Whampoa' pattern, in the centre, a series of pagoda-style towers, connected by ornate fencing and bridges over an expanse of water, the central structure having bells hanging from the two tiered roof; in the foreground, rocks and foliage and a large tree with daisy-style flowers and pendulate twigs or fronds; in the background, further buildings on rocky islands; the rim with ornate meandering scroll-work and flowered sprigs with three large foliate motifs within elaborately scrolled cartouches, all on a mosaic style ground.
