Plate, glazed earthenware with a plain rim, tapering flange, cushion-moulded profile with a plain foot rim; the plate has a bluish glaze and is transfer printed in black under the glaze, at the centre of the plate is a scene of George Hopkins's American Market at the Hayes, Cardiff; this depicts the interior of a long, rectangular covered market building, the scene is centred on a large display of goods running along the central aisle of the market, around three sides of which are counters where sellers are serving customers, positioned at the left side of the market is an arrangement of dry goods ('FLOUR' and 'TEA') in front of which is another serving counter, large joints of meat hang from ceiling joists; six horse-drawn trams are situated around the flange, each inscribed with a different Cardiff location.
