Horse haulage in South Wales in about 1910. In 1913 there were nearly 18,000 horses employed in the South Wales Coalfield pulling trams from each miner's individual working place into assembly points (double partings) from whence haulages pulled them to the shaft bottom. The tram shown, with its Rowbotham wheels to allow the use of spragging, is hinged at the end to allow the discharge of rubbish into the waste area behind the face. The horse is connected to the tram by means of a "shaft and gun".
