Roman copper alloy disc brooch
Fragmentary with the pin mechanism lost. The decoration is contained within a narrow outer border of bronze. The enamel inlay occupies two zones separated by a scalloped hexagonal septum with large bronze roundels at the points; a further large bronze roundel occupies the centre of the brooch. The type has been discussed by Hattatt who notes its widespread distribution and Bateson who observes the use of two different coloured enamels, one in each zone. The Usk example seems to have had blue enamel in its outer zone and may have had the much favoured blue and red combination. The type may have a spring on a single lug or between a pair of lugs at the rear. Further examples of the type from south Wales may be cited from Caerwent and Carmarthen.
