Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury

HAWGOOD, Dominic

Dr Rowan Williams was born in Swansea in 1950. After studying Theology at Cambridge University, he began his career as an academic, and was made a Professor at Oxford University in 1986. He became Bishop of Monmouth in 1992 and Archbishop of Wales in 2000, before being consecrated Archbishop of Canterbury in 2002. A renowned thinker and theologian, he has published numerous books, including two volumes of poetry.

Dominic Hawgood grew up in Shropshire and graduated in 2005 from University of Wales, Newport with first class honours in Photographic Art. During his studies he exhibited in numerous group shows, and in April 2005 was a finalist in the first annual Bright Young Things exhibition in Berlin. Hawgood says of this project ‘This commission, my first, is a signifier of my drive to inject my practice with a new professional relevance, and to apply my skills in new ways’. Hawgood has created a reflective, atmospheric image, reminiscent of the paintings of Johannes Vermeer in its use of interior space and contrasts of light and dark.
