Quilt
'Cariad' quilt made and designed by the textile artist Cefyn Burgess, 2008. In 2006 the artist was awarded a research grant from the Arts Council of Wales to explore themes associated with the migration of Welsh people to America. This quilt was the centrepiece of the resulting exhibition, titled 'Mudo / Migration'.
Ground layer of red and white wool with a simple rectangular block pattern woven in. Thirteen appliqué patches of flannel in red and cream. The patches are free-hand machine embroidered in contrasting thread (red on white and white on red). Vermicelli stitch is used to fill the background in the same colour as the patch and images of roses are drawn on the cream squares, poppies and carnations on the red squares. In between the squares are strips of white flannel also embroidered with vermicelli stitch. Applied to each strip are four red hearts. The quilt is backed with cream flannel and the edges are bound in the same fabric. The top and bottom edges have channels to slide batons in for hanging the textile.
