Lady Charlotte Guest (1812-1895)

Born Lady Charlotte Lindsay, she married John Guest in 1833. When her husband later became ill she was increasingly involved in the management of the Dowlais Ironworks and ran it herself for three years following his death in 1852. She learned Welsh and is remembered today as the first translator of the Mabinogion.

Y Fonesig Charlotte Lindsay oedd ei henw bedydd cyn priodi John Guest ym 1833. Pan gafodd ei gŵr ei daro’n wael yn ddiweddarach, dechreuodd gymryd yr awenau fwyfwy yng Ngwaith Haearn Dowlais a’i reoli ar ei phen ei hun am dair blynedd wedi iddo farw ym 1852. Dysgodd Gymraeg, ac fe’i cofir heddiw fel cyfieithydd cyntaf y Mabinogion.
