Seal impression: Royal
Reverse. The king royally robed (though a portion seems torn away), crowned and holding a sceptre with his right hand, seated upon a horse trotting to sinister. On the sea behind him appear a warship in full sail as well as a steam-powered vessel. In the field, behind the king’s back a shield bears the royal arms: quarterly, 1. and 4. ENGLAND, 2. SCOTLAND, 3. IRELAND, together with the motto of the Garter. Above the king’s head is the motto: DIEV ET MON DROIT; below the quayside on which the horse passes, is a trident. The margin upper part of the matrix is decorated with roses, shamrocks and thistles. The lower border bears on scrolls, intertwined with foliage, the names of the colonies and dominions: dext. Canada, West Indies, Newfoundland, British Africa, Gibraltar; sin. Malta, India, Eastern Colonies, Australia, New Zealand.
