Roman whetstone
with roughly sub-rectangular cross-section. The accretion matrix has broken down and the structure is disintegrating to sand; consequently no polished surfaces have survived. Unless the breakdown of the matrix is due to the chemical environment of deposition (which does not appear to have been exceptional) it is difficult to envisage this tone having been used as a whetstone, and its identification as such must be a little doubtful.
