Great Western Railway locomotive model
7mm scale model of G.W.R. 'Aberdare' class 2-6-0 locomotive No.2659 with tender (85.52I.2). Green/Indian red livery, coal in tender and royal cypher on panel in gold.
The original locomotive built at Swindon in 1902, and withdrawn in 1935. Wheels 4 feet 7½ inches; cylinders 18 x 26 inches; tractive effort 25800lbs. Locomotives of this class were built by the GWR especially for hauling coal trains in South Wales and worked mainly on South Wales main line and the line from Aberdare through Quakers Yard and Crumlin Viaduct to Pontypool Road. The last of the class was withdrawn in 1949.
This model was presented to the Museum by the Associates on the 150th Anniversary of the Great Western Railway in June 1985.
