Walking stick

Birch and teak walking stick given to T. Thomas, Llwynypia, Rhondda, 1895.

Everyday objects become works of art in the hands of a wood carver. Craftspeople can see designs in the way wood has grown, and use their carving skills to bring them to life. In the past, carved sticks were given to people as a token of appreciation. Some sticks reflect particular interests or a particular activity. Stickmaking was a hobby craft rather than a means of earning a living.

Wooden stick with crop handle, which has brass end-piece fixed by 2 nails; collar carved with date; stem dimpled and carved with painted illustrations, of leaves, plants, birds etc.; iron ferrule.
