Hammer head
A hammer head, ‘gordd wal’, used for splitting slate.
In the Dyffryn Nantlle area quarryman generally preferred to use a ‘gordd wal’ made from wood. It is therefore unusual to find an iron ‘gordd wal’ in Dyffryn Nantlle. Quarrymen in the Blaenau Ffestiniog area preferred to use a ‘gordd wal’ made from iron.
