Medieval bone counter
Type 1 tableman or counter/gaming piece cut from antler or cattle mandibles. Lathe-turned flat discs used in tabula or tables (board games). Decoration appears on one side and are usually five concentric incised lines or grooves (3 inner and one outer circle, with exception of number 2). All have a repeating circle of ring and dot ornament. (type 1) Cut from an antler pedicle, it is thick, with a central lathe-hole and decorated with at least two wide, deep concentric grooves.
