Medieval / Post-Medieval copper alloy thimble
A sewing ring with a possible maker's mark. It is decorated with repeated punched dots arranged in a spiral.
'Ring' of topless timbles were used for specialist tasks and materials such as canvas sail or leather, and the coarse punched dots are for a large needle. An example from Norwich was dated c. 1600-1700 (Margeson 1993, fig. 139, no. 1461), which examples from Amsteram are dated to the late sixteenth or early seventeenth centuries (eg Baart et al 1977, 145, no. 144)
