Griffith Jones taught over 150,000 people to read. Children and adults alike were taught to read Welsh by reading the Bible. Circulating schools were organised for this purpose throughout Wales by Griffith Jones, the rector of Llanddowror in Carmarthenshire. Between 1737 and 1761, there were over 3,000 schools with over 150,000 scholars. When the Methodist Revival began in Wales, it was at its strongest in the areas where the circulating schools had been established.
