The Try that Beat the All Blacks

GILLETT, Frank (Sports illustrator for the Western Mail)

This artwork shows the first ever test match between the Wales and New Zealand rugby teams on the 16th of December 1905. Refereed by Scotland referee John Dallas, the game was played at the Cardiff Arms Park in front of over 40,000 people. In this artwork, Welsh winger Teddy Morgan dives across the try line giving Wales the lead over the All Blacks before half-time. Wales won the game 3-0. This match is not only significant because of the scoreline but also because the Welsh team and supporters, led by winger Teddy Morgan, sang the Welsh national anthem, Hen Wlad fy Nhadau, in response to hearing the New Zealand Haka. This was the first occasion a national anthem was sung before a sporting fixture.
