Oakeley slate quarry, photograph
The quarrying of large slabs of slate involves channelling across the chamber by means of numerous parallel bore holes and then cutting a free side. This takes advantage of joints and cleavage planes to dislodge blocks of convenient size.
Candles are used for illumination.
