S.S. EMPIRE SUCCESS, glass negative

ss. EMPIRE SUCCESS (5988gt) : Built 1921 as ss HAGEN by Vulkan Werke, Hamburg, for the Hamburg Amerika Line. 1939 – Seized at Durban by the South African Navy on 8th September, and renamed IXIA. 1940 – Bombed and damaged while at Peterhead, Scotland on 30th September. She was repaired, assigned to MoWT and renamed EMPIRE SUCCESS. 1948 – Laid up at Liverpool from January following a collision. She was found uneconomic to repair and was scuttled in the Bay of Biscay on 22nd August 1948 with a cargo of obsolete chemical weapons. (wikipedia).(mariners-l.co.uk / Empire ships)
