The end of the upper Lake Penllergare (photograph)

Salted paper print, from Calotype paper negative 86.31I/257. Shows the Upper Lake at Penllergare. Mounted on cream card with black ink frame surround and title at bottom right of mount.

John Dillwyn Llewelyn ordered the construction of the two lakes at Penllergare in 1839. They impounded vast quantities of water with the Upper Lake descending over a man-made waterfall into the Lower Lake. In this carefully staged photograph Dillwyn Llewelyn has placed an umbrella, deck chair and basket on the path, and shows the old stone steps and bridge at the farthest end of the lake. The lakes were the subject of a number of photographs by JDL where he included the boat house, shanty, bridges, and waterfall.
