John Angel Gibbs, photograph

Mounted studio photographic portrait of John Angel Gibbs, in his uniform as a Major in the Welch Regiment, about 1916.

John Angel Gibbs was founder of the shipping firm, Gibbs & Co. Ltd of Newport in 1907. He was killed in 1917 leading his battalion in an attack on Menin Ridge. In 1917 his widow, Gladys, bought the Taff Vale Railway hotel at Penarth Docks and gave it to the National Children's Home in memory of John. The J.A. Gibbs Home opened on 24 October 1918 as a nautical training school for orphans of the First World War and children from deprived families.
