Cup, cabinet and saucer

Nantgarw China Works (1813 - 1822)

Cabinet cup, soft-paste frit porcelain, white highly translucent paste, clear lustrous glaze with traces of iridescense, body with tapering sides and everted rim, standing on three paw feet; high pierced scroll, fan and patera handle with mask terminal; painted with the arms of Bridge, Or, a bend engrailed sable charged with a chaplet of oak of the field, on a chief azure a bridge with three arches embattled and at each end a tower proper, cadency mark of a mulletsable, label or, all within a plain circlet bearing the motto 'Deus et Patria', crest above, a chaplet of oak or between two wings elevated sable, each charged with a bridge of one arch, and the motto 'Libertas' amid pink and white mantling; deep border of gilt anthemia and foliage reserved against the white body, swags below, broad gilt band inside the lip, handle and feet also gilded. Saucer, similar paste, everted sides, on a shallow foot ring, similar gilded decoration of anthemia and foliage within line borders, the well with a central roundel within pendant swags, the exterior with three contentric lines and a border of tulip heads.
