Roman copper alloy lorica segmentata tie loop
From the rear this tie-hook fragment shows plainly that it was manufactured from a piece of sheet metal tapered to a narrow strand at one end and the edges of the strand rolled backwards to form the material for the hook; close to the junction between the plate and the hook these edges have been insufficiently worked to give a smooth finish and remain partly open.
