Smock
Coat-type smock of bleached linen embroidered with linen thread. Reputed to have been worn by Squire Vaughan of Llanfilo, Breconshire, and subsequently by a carter at Bronllys, Breconshire.
Large square flap collars. Twenty-two mother-of-pearl buttons. Two flapped and buttoned pockets. One button opneing at cuffs. Smocking done in outline, cable, wave, double cable and double wave. Embroidery design on colar flaps is of four hearts meetin in a circle, to resemble a flower, done in heavy chain stitch and filled with French knots, framed with lines of feather and chain. Ten tucks on each flap decorated alternately with herringbone and feather. Herringbone stitching also outlines the smocked panels, cuffs and pocket flaps.
