S.S. ELSE MARIE (2045 Grt.). Built in 1917 by the Superior SB. Co., Superior, Wisconsin, (yard no.525) as CLEVELAND for Nieuwejaar & Hansen, of Bergen (Norway). The order for this ship was placed by Knut Knutsen OAS of Haugesund. In 1923, the vessel was sold to Soc. Algerienne de Nav. pour l' Afrique du Nord (Ch. Schiaffino & cie. mgr.), Algiers. In 1927 she hoisted the Norwegian flag as GUNGNER for A/S Gungner (L.M. Knutzen & C.P. Wright mgrs.), of Porsgrunn. In 1933, A/S Schanches Rederi (Sophus Schanche mgr.), of Bergen acquired the vessel and renamed her ELSE MARIE. At the German occupation of Norway, she was in home waters. On 7 July 7 1942, she was sunk by Soviet aircraft west of Vardo whilst en route from Kirkenes to Germany with iron ore.
